Saat ini kita menyaksikan dua perang besar terjadi di Ukraina dan Gaza dengan ribuan orang tewas dan jutaan orang mengungsi; sementara itu di Asia Tenggara, Myanmar masih berada dalam situasi yang sulit. Masyarakat mulai ragu terhadap institusi multilateral dan minilateralisme strategis sedang mencapai momentumnya. Disisi lain, kekuatan besar seperti Amerika Serikat, Uni Eropa, Tiongkok, dan Rusia, terus bersaing di berbagai belahan dunia. Hal ini kemudian yang membuat kekuatan menengah seperti Indonesia, Brasil, India, Arab Saudi, dan Afrika Selatan memainkan peran yang lebih besar dalam urusan dunia.
Perspektif Asia Tenggara yang memiliki banyak perjanjian multilateral stratejik seperti RCEP, CPTPP, IPEF dan Tiongkok yang mengusulkan inisiatif baru seperti Global Development Initiative (GDI) yang berfokus pada agenda pembangunan. Perkembangan geopolitik dan geoekonomi telah menimbulkan risiko dan peluang baru yang harus dihadapi oleh semua negara.
Dalam sesi ini, para panelis akan mengevaluasi tantangan yang dihadapi serta prospek kerjasama di tengah perkembangan geopolitik dan geoekonomi yang terpecah-belah saat ini. Bagaimana seharusnya komunitas global melangkah maju dengan perkembangan yang sangat dinamis, dan apa upaya kreatif yang dapat dilakukan dalam menghadapi hal tersebut?
Today two lethal wars are raging: the Russia-Ukraine war in East Europe where hundreds of thousands of soldiers and civilians have been killed, and the Israel-Hamas war in the Middle East where thousands have been slaughtered and millions of people displaced. In Southeast Asia, in Myanmar’s Rakhine State, civil war flared up again recently. Established multilateral institutions have not been able to resolve these conflicts. Nations are trying out strategic minilateralism as an alternative.
And while the major powers like the United States, the European Union, China, and Russia continue to wage their rivalries across the world, middle powers like Indonesia, Brazil, India, Saudi Arabia, and South Africa are assuming an increasing role in world affairs.
In the economic realms, Southeast Asia is at the epicentrum of Mega FTAs such as the RCEP, the CPTPP, and IPEF. China has launched a new worldwide economic program, the Global Development Initiative, which offers an alternative to Western-led development initiatives.
All these geopolitical and geoeconomic development efforts provide opportunities as well as new risks that nations must navigate.
Hence, in this session, the panellists will assess the challenges faced and the prospects of cooperation amid the fragmented geopolitical and geoeconomic landscape today. How should the global community move forward within this evolving landscape, and how can nations creatively leverage them?
